One of the real bonuses of acrylic paints is that you can paint on virtually any porous surface, especially if it's been properly prepared. Here, we'll look at some of the traditional surfaces that work well, with some surprising ones that you might have otherwise disregarded. We'll also have a quick look at what that preparation entails - it's neither complicated nor expensive.

We'll look first at some of the more traditional surfaces used with acrylics, then consider some very economical alternatives. While stretched canvas or canvas panels are a great surface on which to paint, they are more costly than many others. They do have a certain style though, that gives you the feeling of being a 'proper' artist - not least the 'bounce' of the brush on a stretched canvas in a wooden frame.
